How Much Do Helical Piles Cost?

The first question you will be fielding as a helical pile installer will be the cost. Helical pile costs will vary for every job. Because helical piles come in various sizes and materials, some are solid shafts, and others are hollow pipe-like shafts. Before helical piles are installed, a soil sample will be taken to determine the composition of the soil. The soil composition will influence the depth each helical pile must go to reach load-bearing soil. It will also be determined by the amount of hydraulic pressure required to install the helical pile.

How Do Helical Piles, Work?

Each helical pile can be made of either a solid steel shaft or a circular hollow steel section with helicals attached to them. These round helical-cut into the soil as they are installed. Powerful hydraulic equipment is used to apply the proper amount of torque to screw the pile into the ground. The pressure gauges on the hydraulic motor will indicate the quality of the soil. The engineering report clearly instructs the helical pile installer on the exact pressure required.

Helical piles vs. Helical Piers

Helical piles, also referred to as helical Piers, have also been known as helical anchors and screw piles, all referring to the same product. Helical piles have been used in the United States for approximately a hundred years for heavy construction and Foundations.  Only recently, they’ve been used for a multitude of different applications.

  • Failing foundations
  • Utility pole installation
  • Installing decks
  • Sinking foundations
  • Carports
  • Solar panel fields

Helical Pile Installer Building Decks

Deck builders are falling in love with helical piles. They’re replacing concrete pillows that are used to support new deck installations. Deck builders no longer have to dig holes and lug 80-pound bags of concrete. Or spend hours mixing it and waiting for it to harden. Digging numerous holes to install posts creates an enormous waste of time and a lot of soil that needs to be removed from the site.

A Helical pile installation leaves no mess

Helical piles are screwed into the ground, and the appropriate bracket is attached at the designated height. Allowing the deck installation to continue immediately, The helical pile cost was comparable to the old concrete installation process.

Helical Piles, Work Better Than Concrete Supports?

The helical pile installer will screw the helical pile into the ground below the frost line using hydraulic equipment. The length of the helical pile will be determined by the amount of torque required to install it. The size of the helical pile and the width of the helical plate will be determined by the composition of the soils. There are pressure gauges attach the hydraulic installation equipment that monitors the torque required to install the helical pile into the ground.

The helical pile has been successfully installed when the proper torque is reached. The depth of the helical pile installation will only be determined by the amount of torque necessary to fulfill the engineering specifications. The shaft of the pile can then be cut to the exact height needed to install the proper bracket for whatever application is being used.

If the pressure gauge on hydraulic equipment has a low reading it indicates that the soil is weak. This will indicate to the helical pile installer the pile must be screwed deeper into the soil. The soil condition will always mandate how deep helical pile is installed.

The helical pile installer will add additional shaft extensions to the proper depth is reached, and the  soil has the adequate weight-bearing capacity.

Advantages of Helical Piles

Here are just a few of the advantages of helical piles over traditional footings for deck installations and solar panel fields, as well as many other applications. Eliminate the backbreaking job of digging footing holes and dealing with the mixing and installing concrete. For foundation work helical piles can be used to rescue a failing foundation.(See our article on foundation failure)

One of the most significant advantages of using helical piles is that they can be installed quickly. This may come in handy if you’re trying not to break anything else but instead fix an existing foundation, reducing disruption and potential delays for construction projects where soil conditions don’t allow traditional foundations.
This means it would work well near rivers or other bodies of water for their stability isn’t always the greatest right off shore. However, there are still plenty more reasons why this type should come first

Helical Pile Log Book

Every helical pile installer must maintain a logbook commonly known as a field report.

Every helical pile is identified by its depth and amount of pressure required to fulfill the engineering specifications required for each job. Only a certified helical pile installer has the training to maintain these logs in such a manner that they are accepted by the building inspectors.
